Rhythmic Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou spoke with me and a reporter from The (Baton Rouge) Advocate this week ahead of her speaking engagement at LSU on Tuesday. It was beautiful to hear her speak. It was clear how she considered each word as she said it aloud, but she even repeated certain phrases, mulling over the sounds and syncopation as she did so.

I went with a Q&A style with this piece, even though that meant acknowledging the presence of The Advocate writer to readers (who asked the last two questions). I felt that, in writing a story, I would want to include too much of each quote to really make it a traditional story. The Q&A format was the best way to keep Maya Angelou sound true to herself.
